I agree wholeheartedly with this. It is also been an issue with local government spending on older people in Scotland. Prior to 2007 there were funding streams such as Supporting People where for every pound spent at least two pounds was saved in other areas of public expenditure. The SNP ended the Supporting People fund, did not give any national support to an outcome for Older People so local authorities all but ended expenditure supporting those who had benefitted previously.

Thanks for the comment. Sorry for the delay in replying as we are still in test mode for the site.

I think this is a very important issue. I'm not banging the drum for or against any political party on this issue. What interests me is what are the things that we can do to allow learning through life.

This is about employers supporting education. Access and funding to vocational and business courses and yes, access to university education in later life.

I am interested what, going forward, we can do to allow people who have maybe been made redundant or are working in low paid or part time work as part of an enforced career change mid life. particularly as i think this is a growing issue as part of our pattern of work - and one that is probably not going to change.

A vital component of helping us put things back together again.

It should be pointed out that the raising of OU tuition fees will not be occuring (in the short term) in Scotland.

However, it is a very serious issue amongst liberals who, you rightly say see learning as a vital party of a liberal society.

Another reason why my liberal friends are turning from the Liberal Democrat party who didn't stop this happening (in England&Wales)

I also agree. A strong Home Rule position is, I think, closest to what people in Scotland actually want.

My take on current polls is that independence has support from about a third of Scots. And this in a time of SNP honeymoon.

Devo-max solutions have however probably grown in popularity.

I agree that we should be articulating a strong home rule position - but devolution doesn't stop at Edinburgh. If we look at how the SNP is centralising pretty much anything it can get its hands on, our USP has to be about giving power away to the lowest practical level.

I expect that there will be some exciting stuff to debate at Scottish Conference in Dunfermline.
